On Monday, Lozier’s Omaha interns celebrated the conclusion of the summer program with lunch and presentations.
Training and Development Specialist Amy Walker started off the morning with a recap of the program. Over the summer, the interns learned more about their communication styles through the DISC assessment, regularly met with their mentors and enjoyed two outings throughout the length of the program.
Atika Zaman started off the discussion by recapping her experience as an Industrial Engineering Intern. The Temple University student documented standard operating procedures for paint lines and brackets in the North Plant alongside Manufacturing Engineering Intern Keegan Johnson. The two were often required to speak with operators in the plant and ask questions.
“I learned more about what manufacturing is and how it works because I’ve just seen the academic side. I got a different point of view and everything about it,” said Zaman.
Johnson shared a similar sentiment. “We started off doing the SOPs, going and talking to the people in the plant. I think it was interesting to be in the thick of people actually working on the machinery.”
“I can sit in a lecture all day, learn from my professors at Iowa State and think I know how to do something. But I don’t actually know how to do it until I can see it in action and get my hands on it. That’s been a big thing this summer,” said returning Industrial Engineering Intern Ethan Van Pelt.
Product Engineering intern Marshall Manderfeld had the opportunity to travel to Lozier’s Joplin plant to design two cabinets for Walmart checkouts. “That was a great experience. I appreciate being able to go there.”
Learning and Development Intern Ava LaSure strengthened her skills by facilitating the annual Employee Engagement Survey. “Skills such as leadership, teamwork, feedback, problem solving and so many more have been strengthened and my experience in the world of manufacturing has been incredible.”
“Some key takeaways from this experience were definitely my ability to enhance my research and content creation skills and also develop stronger instructional design skills which is going to be super important for me, especially going into these next two years of college,” said Eleanor Brislen, Learning and Development intern.
“It was nice trying to learn how to separate the different softwares and the purposes of them, and how they work together, communicate, and work for the end user, and make sure your process works well,” said IT intern Emily LaMotte.
IAT Intern Devin Sherrod appreciated the variety of people he had had the opportunity to work with at Lozier. “I’m working with people who have been here ten, twenty, thirty years, so there’s a lot of information I can intake with people on a day-to-day basis.”
“I really wanted to absorb as much information as possible,” agreed Accounting Intern Leah Helten. “And I did just that. I absorbed so much information to the point that I filled up five entire notebooks!”
Training and Development Manager Suzanne Ritchie concluded the event with some final words of advice to the interns.
“Keep learning, keep asking questions, and never underestimate the difference you can make. We want to thank you for picking Lozier for your summer internship. We thank you for all the work you did, the ideas that you shared and the questions you asked that make us better.”
