The Beaver Valley Country Store’s old checkouts and L-shaped counter from the 1970s/80s
About five miles from McClure’s plant lies the Beaver Valley Country Store and gas station.
The Beaver Springs, Pennsylvania grocery store is a staple in the small town, providing everyday goods, as well as their signature briskets, pork, and country favorites. Several months ago, Lozier’s McClure team found out that the store still housed two Belted Checkouts and an L-Shaped Gas Sales Attendant Checkout that were believed to be installed in the late 1970’s or early 1980’s.
McClure Engineering and Quality Manager Butch Heim, Production Supervisor Pharis Trutt and MCM Maintenance Journeyman Craig Sipe coordinated with Omaha Product Design Technician Chris Hellstrom and Product Engineer III Ben O’Brien to design new checkouts and an L-shaped counter that would replace the outdated units. The new parts were fabricated by the Omaha and McClure plants, with Heim making several trips to the store to discuss the project with the store owners as well as gather dimensions and specifications.

The Beaver Valley Country store after the installation of new checkouts and a new L-shaped counter
On June 16-17 the checkouts and cabinets were installed in Beaver Valley Country Store by Hellstrom, Trutt, Heim and Sipe. The project was completed at the expense of Lozier as a “community outreach” initiative. One highlight of the installation process was the Lozier team finding a coupon from 1987 for ice cream under an old checkout. Several long-term former McClure employees and retirees stopped by to see the progress as well. The store owners were overjoyed with the new look and functionality of the checkouts and cabinets.
The old, belted checkouts are planned to be shipped to Omaha, refurbished and displayed in the Main Office show room.
